One of the most talented cricketers from South Africa, your coach has been involved in some of the greatest knocks in the history of international cricket – six sixes in an over in ODI, and 175 from 111 balls among others. He is one of only ten batsmen in ODI history to score three consecutive hundreds.

The focus of any fast bowler must be to get strong at the basics. Just by trying to bowl fast, you would do nothing but injure yourself. From learning to bowl fast, this blog focuses on drills that can improve your technique and help you bowl with confidence.

If you’re an inspired fast bowler, we’re sure the last blog about learning to bowl fast was interesting. Moving on, we focus on bowling drills that can enhance your progress as a bowler.

1-Step drill

The first drill is called the 1-step drill. To start with, as a right-handed fast bowler, place your left foot somewhere near the bowling crease, however, parallel to the stumps. Ensure your right foot is planted in a diagonal direction, ideally towards the mid-wicket region. Lift your left arm followed by your left leg near the hips at a 90-degree angle for the best technique.

As you move forward with your action, place your right foot on the bowling crease, which is ideally pointed towards the off stump. Next, bring your left arm down and complete the action with a smooth follow through.

5-Step drill

The last drill was all about focusing on the action from a stationary position. The next drill is the 5-step drill, which includes momentum. For this exercise, place a cone approximately 5 steps before the bowling crease. This drill is ideally for generating momentum and pace just before the release of the ball. Following the similar technique of the 1-step drill, execute the perfect follow through by exerting force on the upper body for the right momentum.

Bowling at the cone

Now that we know to master the perfect action along with the best run-up technique, it’s time to focus on the accuracy. Before starting this drill, place 2 to 3 cones near the batting crease. Place them in such a way that when you release the ball, the intention is to bowl around the middle and the off stump. The objective of this drill, just like all the previous drills is to finish your follow through using the best technique.

Have a steady run-up, exert significant force on your action and follow through all the way till the middle of the pitch and towards the batter. For the next post, we present you more bowling drills!
